You can buy a Fire Stone at the Pokéathlon Dome on Tuesday for 2,500 Athlete Points in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. After you unlock the National Dex, Sunday and Thursday are added to the schedule. If the stone is missing on a Thursday, check which Pokédex you have before looking for another counter.
Pokéathlon days and price
| Your Pokédex | When the Fire Stone is sold |
|---|---|
| Johto Pokédex | Tuesday · 2,500 Athlete Points |
| National Dex unlocked | Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday · 2,500 Athlete Points |
The daily prize lists separate the original and expanded inventories. The Fire Stone costs 2,500 points in both. You do not need to wait for the National Dex if you visit on Tuesday.

How to buy your first stone
- Go to the Pokéathlon Dome, west of the National Park.
- Take part in Pokéathlon events and save at least 2,500 Athlete Points. These are separate from the money in your wallet.
- Visit the Athlete Shop on a day when your current inventory includes the Fire Stone.
- Select the Fire Stone and exchange your points. You do not need to win a specific evolution stone as an event prize.
You can work towards the points first and return on the right day. Keep the day and your Pokédex status together when planning the visit: Tuesday works with either inventory.
Why is the Fire Stone missing or unavailable?
- Wrong day for your progress: Sunday and Thursday are extra days in the National Dex inventory. Before that, use Tuesday.
- Not enough Athlete Points: having 2,500 in ordinary money does not cover the exchange.
- Already bought today’s stone: the shop tracks whether you have received that daily item. More points do not let you repeatedly buy the same daily slot.
The purchase rules check your Athlete Points and whether that daily item has already been received. For another copy, return on a later eligible day.
Other ways to get a Fire Stone
Bill’s grandfather: visit the Sea Cottage on Route 25 in Kanto and complete his Pokémon requests in order. The gift sequence includes a Fire Stone. If he is describing a different Pokémon, continue the current request rather than expecting the Fire Stone immediately.
Bug-Catching Contest: after the National Dex is unlocked, a Fire Stone is one possible first-place reward. It is not guaranteed. The contest prize rules give a Sun Stone for first place before the National Dex, so repeated early wins will not produce a Fire Stone.
For a planned evolution, the Pokéathlon exchange gives you a clear points target and shopping day. The contest is another opportunity if you are already taking part, but a first-place finish alone does not determine which stone you receive.
Which Pokémon use it?
In these games, a Fire Stone evolves Growlithe into Arcanine, Vulpix into Ninetales, and Eevee into Flareon. These are the Fire Stone entries in the evolution data. Use the stone on the Pokémon you want to evolve; choose carefully if you only have one.
Playing Gold, Silver or Crystal instead?
The Game Boy Color games have different item sources and no Pokéathlon. Use our separate Fire Stone guide for Gold, Silver and Crystal for those versions.
