Fire Stone in Pokémon Crystal, Gold and Silver: Locations

In Pokémon Crystal, Schoolboy Alan on Route 36 can give you a Fire Stone after you register his phone number and he finds one. In Gold and Silver, that phone gift is unavailable. Bill’s grandfather on Route 25 gives one Fire Stone in all three games, after you complete his earlier Pokémon requests.

The methods below apply to the original Gold, Silver and Crystal releases. Keep your version in mind: the trainer’s phone number exists in Gold and Silver too, but it does not unlock Crystal’s stone gift.

Crystal: get a Fire Stone from Schoolboy Alan

1. Find Schoolboy Alan on Route 36 and defeat him.
2. Speak to him again after the battle and register his number in your Pokégear.
3. Wait for a call saying he has found an item for you. A normal chat or a rematch invitation is not the gift call.
4. Return to Alan on Route 36 and collect the Fire Stone. Make room in the Items pocket if your bag is full.

The Crystal Route 36 script records both the phone registration and gift collection. Alan’s phone script uses random checks, so there is no fixed wait time to promise. He can find another Fire Stone later; collecting the first does not make the gift permanently unavailable.

Gold, Silver and Crystal: Bill’s grandfather on Route 25

Visit Bill’s grandfather in Bill’s house on Route 25 in Kanto. Bring the requested Pokémon in your party. His requests follow this sequence; you cannot skip straight to the Fire Stone:

After collecting a reward, leave the house and return for the next request. Each reward is given once. Showing him another Growlithe or Vulpix after receiving the Fire Stone will not produce an unlimited supply. The reconstructed Gold/Silver event script and Crystal event script contain that sequence and the reward flags.

Why is Alan not giving you a Fire Stone?

• You are playing Gold or Silver: his number does not enable the Crystal-only gift. Use Bill’s grandfather for the method described above.
• You have only won the first battle: talk to Alan again and check that his number was registered.
• You have not received the gift call: registering his number is not an immediate reward. Continue playing; calls can also concern a rematch.
• Your bag is full: free an item slot and speak to him again. The collection script checks whether the item can be added.

Which Pokémon use a Fire Stone in these games?

• Vulpix → Ninetales
• Growlithe → Arcanine
• Eevee → Flareon

These are the three Fire Stone evolutions in the original generation-two games, as shown in the evolution data. Use the stone from the bag on the Pokémon you want to evolve; simply giving it to the Pokémon to hold will not trigger a stone evolution.
