In Pokémon Crystal, Eevee evolves into Espeon or Umbreon when it levels up with at least 220 friendship. A level-up from 04:00 to 17:59 gives you Espeon; from 18:00 to 03:59, it gives you Umbreon. Use the in-game clock at the time of the level-up. Neither a Sun Stone nor a Moon Stone is required.
This guide covers the original Game Boy Color Pokémon Crystal. Other editions and ROM hacks can use different timing or items. Eevee’s evolution conditions distinguish morning/day from night in this game.
Espeon or Umbreon: choose the right time
| Evolution you want | Level-up using the game clock |
|---|---|
| Espeon | 04:00–17:59 |
| Umbreon | 18:00–03:59 |

Morning already counts towards Espeon. Night begins at 18:00 in Crystal, even if it is still light outside. Check the game clock before training. Crystal’s time-of-day boundaries are 04:00, 10:00 and 18:00; the change at 10:00 does not change Eevee’s daytime evolution.
Get Eevee from Bill
First visit the Pokémon Center in Ecruteak City for the encounter with Bill. Afterwards, return to Goldenrod City. In his family’s house in the southwest of the city, Bill gives you a level 20 Eevee. Leave a slot free in your party: you cannot accept it with all six slots occupied. Bill’s Eevee gift is available once per save.
This Eevee does not need to reach a particular high level. Friendship and the time of its next level-up determine the result. One Eevee can still be unevolved at level 30 while another is ready earlier.
Build friendship without spending all your money
Keep Eevee in your party while exploring. Travelling together and gaining levels raise friendship. Pick battles that Eevee can survive and heal it before it keeps fainting. Crystal’s friendship changes also include penalties for defeats and bitter medicine.
Avoid bitter remedies while working towards this evolution. Vitamins can help if Eevee can still take them, but you do not have to spend your savings on them. If you want to train it alongside a stronger Pokémon, our Exp. Share guide explains how to obtain the item.
The haircut brothers in Goldenrod’s Underground offer another option. They work on different days, and you can get one haircut per day. Neither is available on Mondays. Their working days and prices are:
| Day | Brother and price |
|---|---|
| Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday | Older brother: 500 Pokédollars |
| Wednesday, Friday, Sunday | Younger brother: 300 Pokédollars |
| Monday | No haircut available |
Check friendship: a compliment is not an exact reading
Put Eevee first in your party and speak to the friendship rater in Goldenrod. Her house is in the eastern part of the city, north of the Bike Shop. She describes a range rather than giving you an exact number.
Her 200–249 friendship assessment covers values below and above the required 220. A compliment in this range therefore does not guarantee that Eevee is ready. Her highest assessment starts at 250 and is safely above the threshold, but you do not have to wait that long. The rater’s dialogue separates those ranges.
Trigger the level-up deliberately
Save before the next level-up and check the clock. For Espeon, train between 04:00 and 17:59; for Umbreon, between 18:00 and 03:59. Remove a held Everstone, which blocks evolution. Once Eevee levels up with enough friendship, let the evolution finish.
If friendship becomes high enough outside the time window you want, hold off on further level-ups until the right time. Waiting for the clock alone does not trigger evolution: Eevee still needs another level-up afterwards.
If Eevee still will not evolve
Friendship is not high enough: several level-ups do not prove you have reached 220. Keep travelling with Eevee and use available haircuts. Its level alone cannot tell you how much longer this will take.
Wrong time or a held Everstone: check both immediately before the next level-up. Playing in your own evening is not enough for Umbreon; the game clock needs to be within its night window.
An Evolution stone will not help: Fire, Water and Thunder Stones produce different Eevee evolutions. Our Evolution stone overview explains where to obtain them. For Espeon and Umbreon, use friendship and a level-up instead.
