Evolution Stones in Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal

For Fire, Water, Leaf and Thunder Stones in the original Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal, visit Bill’s grandfather on Route 25. Crystal also has phone gifts from four Johto trainers. Moon Stones and Sun Stones use different routes, so check the item you need before travelling.

This guide covers the original Generation II games, not HeartGold, SoulSilver or ROM hacks. King’s Rock is a held trade item, while Everstone prevents certain evolutions; neither belongs in the six-stone use-on-a-Pokémon table.

Bill’s grandfather: bring these Pokémon in order

He lives in Bill’s house on Route 25 in Kanto. Bring the requested Pokémon in your party. You show it to him; you are not trading that Pokémon away.

You cannot jump straight to Pichu for a Thunderstone. Each reward is available once here. After receiving one, leave the house and return for the next request. Keep room in the Items pocket so he can hand over the reward.

Crystal only: stones from phone contacts

Defeat the trainer, speak again and register the phone number. A gift call tells you when a stone is ready to collect; winning the first battle does not guarantee an immediate stone.

Return to the trainer after the gift call. Keep a free item slot. These stone-gift phone events belong to Crystal; do not apply this method to Gold or Silver.

For the Fire Stone route specifically, see our Fire Stone guide.

Moon Stones: Tohjo Falls and Mt. Moon Square

  • Tohjo Falls: a visible Moon Stone item ball is in the western part of the cave on Route 27. This pickup has no Monday-night requirement.
  • Mt. Moon Square: visit on Monday night according to the game clock. Watch the Clefairy dance, use Rock Smash on the rock left behind and search its former spot for the hidden Moon Stone. Collect it before leaving that map; the hidden pickup is reset when you re-enter.

These are two verified original-game routes. Celadon’s Rocket Hideout basement and the Cinnabar Pokémon Mansion are not the routes covered by the Gold/Silver/Crystal map scripts here.

Sun Stone: win the Bug-Catching Contest

First place in the National Park’s Bug-Catching Contest awards a Sun Stone. Contest days are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Merely entering is not enough: the first-place prize is the condition to meet.

Which Pokémon evolve with each stone?

WaterPoliwhirl → Poliwrath; Shellder → Cloyster; Staryu → Starmie; Eevee → Vaporeon
LeafGloom → Vileplume; Weepinbell → Victreebel; Exeggcute → Exeggutor
ThunderPikachu → Raichu; Eevee → Jolteon
MoonNidorina → Nidoqueen; Nidorino → Nidoking; Clefairy → Clefable; Jigglypuff → Wigglytuff
SunGloom → Bellossom; Sunkern → Sunflora

King’s Rock and Everstone work differently

King’s Rock: give it to Slowpoke or Poliwhirl as a held item, then trade that Pokémon. The evolutions are Slowking and Politoed respectively. A man in Slowpoke Well B2F gives you a King’s Rock; leave room in your bag.

Everstone: it is not a stone you select to trigger an evolution. Holding one blocks level-up evolution. Bill’s grandfather gives one for showing Lickitung.

For training, our Exp. Share guide explains another useful held item. For legendary catches, continue with Entei and Raikou in Crystal.

Sources and limits
